I have only had a few times when I have had an epiphany. One for me was when I was just outside of Beaune last year. I was fortunate to be in Pulingny Montrachet. It happened at Etienne Sauzet winery. We were in a small cellar tasting room and Benoit the assistant winemaker brought in all of their selections. 11 bottles from Villages wines (basic) to the Grand Cru (absurdly expensive). We went through where each vineyard was and what soil types they had and then talked about the resulting exposure characteristics that were presenting themselves in the wines. In the end we walked out in the vineyard and looked up at the hill and saw where all these wines were born. It was amazing they displayed such differences in flavor and body with the vineyards so close to each other. Such is Terroir.
